Parts of the estate were probably laid out in Saxon times and must have existed before the Doomsday Book was compiled in 1086. Later, for nearly 200 years, Burley was a Royal Manor. The current building was erected in 1852, but it was a further 80 years before the house became a hotel, when a restaurant and bedroom wing were added. During World War Two, the hotel was requisitioned and used as a military headquarters by Lord Montgomery and his chiefs of staff. Over the past 25 years the baronial-style hotel has been continually upgraded and refurbished, the most recent additions being a brand new wing of luxurious premier rooms and a conservatory extension to the restaurant. Burley has 38 spacious and elegant en-suite bedrooms, including some with four-poster beds. The hotel has a relaxing ambience with modern comfortable amenities and several leisure activities.
